History
Geoffroy Guichard was born on July 27, 1867 in Feurs, in the Loire. His parents are the operators of a retail grocery store in Saint-Étienne. In 1889, he married Antonia Perrachon and went into partnership with Paul Perrachon, his cousin by marriage, who had been running a store in Saint-Etienne for about ten years. Geoffroy Guichard became the sole owner of the business in 1892[16].
The latter, located on rue des Jardins (now rue Michel-Rondet[17]), was originally the Casino lyrique de Saint-Étienne. It was a former singing café based in Saint-Etienne in the 19th century. Closed in the 1850s,[19] the Casino lyrique was converted into a retail grocery store in the 1860s. Geoffroy Guichard developed the grocery store to transform it into a general food store, based on the model of Félix Potin. In April 1898, given the success of the concept, Geoffroy Guichard set up the first branch in Veauche[20].
On August 2, 1898, Geoffroy Guichard founded the Société des magasins du Casino et établissements économiques d’alimentation with his father-in-law, under the name Guichard-Perrachon & Cie. In all, seventy-seven people subscribed to the capital of the new company. Mr and Mrs Guichard hold 35% of the capital of this partnership limited by shares. In 1898, warehouses and factories were built in Saint-Étienne.Affected by a fire in August 1900, they were rebuilt to reach an area of 16,000 m2. In the factories, Casino then made bread, oil or chocolate, roasted coffee, distilled and made homemade liqueurs. An important wine trade activity was also developed. Nearly 40 branches were opened in July 1899. In September 1904, the 100th branch was opened in Lamastre in the Ardèche and in July 1905, the 21st dealership.
